Other Ways to Donate

Below are other tax-efficient ways to give. Please note this is not tax advice. Be sure to speak with a qualified tax professional before giving.

From your IRA

If you are over age 70.5 you can give up to $100,000 from your IRA to a charity such as BPC. The withdrawal will not be taxed to you (nor can it be deducted by you) but it WILL be counted as part or all of your required minimum distribution for the year, which may reduce your taxable income. Consult with your tax advisor on this option.

From your brokerage account

You can donate appreciated stock to BPC and avoid paying the capital gains tax on the donated shares. As long as you have held the stock for more than a year, you can deduct the fair market value as of the date of donation. Consult with your tax advisor on this option. Download the form

From your IRA/401(k)/TSP or 403(b)

You can make BPC a partial or complete beneficiary of your account if it's an IRA, 401(k), TSP, or 403(b). Beneficiary designations can be made while you are alive to allocate the funds upon your death to any combination of beneficiaries. IRAs and employer-sponsored retirement accounts are ideal to fund these bequests because the withdrawal is income-tax free to BPC; BPC receives the funds within days after your death; and there are very low if any fees associated with the transfer. In addition, your estate will receive a deduction for the transfer at fair market value. To update your beneficiaries, request a change of beneficiary form from the financial institution that holds the assets, and choose the percentages to leave to your loved ones and charities such as BPC. Annual Per Capita Contribution

Per capita is a fixed amount of money (apportionment) per member that we pay to the larger Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) every year. It is often thought of as a "membership fee" that we pay to be part of our denomination. Because every Presbyterian shares in the benefit of the PC(USA)’s system of government, the expenses associated with coordinating and performing the functions of that system are shared by member churches. The per capita amount requested from each congregation is based on the combined annual budgets of that congregation’s presbytery, the synod in which the presbytery is located, and the General Assembly.

For 2021, Per Capita is $49
