BPC Seeking Co-Sponsor Team for Afghan Refugees

As many of you may know, there has been a tremendous influx of people from Afghanistan who had to leave their homes and are now being housed at US military bases as they prepare to enter the United States.  New Hampshire and Massachusetts will be welcoming several hundred refugees and BPC is being asked to help with this effort.
We want to know how interested our congregation is in helping and are asking - at first - for two things:
1.  Help finding housing - an apartment, an extra home, etc. - that can be rented and/or donated for a period of time.  FYI, housing in our church building is not an option at this time.
2.  Help serving on a Co-Sponsor Team that will provide hospitality and connection with an Afghan family as they get resettled in the Bedford/Manchester area.  We are looking for people who can spend time with our new neighbors doing any number of the following things:
  • Setting up an apartment for an arriving refugee individual or family
  • Rental assistance
  • Collecting furnishing and household items
  • Collecting seasonal clothing and hygiene supplies
  • Purchasing groceries for initial arrival
  • Greeting refugees at the airport when they arrive
  • Preparing a welcome meal for refugees immediately upon arrival
  • Accompanying to medical appointments and advocating for healthcare needs
  • Helping with English skills
  • Financial education
  • Job development
  • Transportation assistance for situations where public transportation isn't available
  • Community Guide to help refugees become more acclimated with the community
If you are interested in offering help with any of the above, please contact the Mission Committee at mission@bedfordpresbyterian.org or Larry Cowen at lcowen@usa.net / 603-860-3056.
This is a tremendous opportunity to show hospitality to our neighbors, is a great way to live into the Matthew 25 Initiative of the PCUSA, and is a wonderful privilege to share God’s love.
