The Reverend Doctor John Sawyer
The Reverend Doctor John Sawyer grew up in Georgia and graduated from Mercer University with a degree in music. He later attended Princeton Theological Seminary and received his Masters of Divinity in 2001. After serving as Director of Christian Education at a church in Charlotte, North Carolina, John was ordained as Associate Pastor of the Northminster Presbyterian Church in Macon, Georgia, in 2004. He has been active in the Youth Conferences at the Montreat Conference Center in North Carolina, where he has served as a music leader. He completed a Certificate in Spiritual Formation through Columbia Theological Seminary in 2014, and completed his Doctor of Ministry degree from Columbia Theological Seminary in 2022. John loves music and sharing his many musical talents with our congregation, meeting new friends, and spending time with his wife, Amy, a physical therapist, and their son. John is excited to be working in ministry as a Pastor at BPC.
Barb Flocco, Director of Music
Barbara Flocco, and her husband James have lived in New Hampshire since 1977. She began her service as Music Director in 2004 at BPC. Barb has taught kindergarten through college music. Prior to coming to Bedford, she served at Hampton Falls Baptist church for 25 years as Music Director. She graduated from West Chester University with a BA and obtained her Masters of Music Education from UNH. She grew up in Philadelphia, PA. Barb is active in the AGO, collaborates and plays all over New England. She also teaches organ and piano in her private studio.
She has brought many wonderful music programs to BPC, along with world renowned guest composers, instrumentalists and vocalists. Her favorite thing about Bedford Presbyterian Church is partnering with all ages to sing for the glory of God. She loves the 125 year old Hutchings organ and the church’s potluck suppers!
Michelle Jones, Administrative Assistant
Michelle Jones and her family have resided in the Manchester area for over 40 years. She began her service 30 years ago as a church secretary and has seen her role at BPC expand. She has worked with many different pastors, a changing congregation, weathered major building projects including Project Joel, and has worked to help the church move forward with new technology.
Michelle grew up in Massachusetts and New York areas and holds a Bachelor of Science in Education. In her free time, she loves being with her seven grandchildren. The reason Michelle has enjoyed so many years of service here is that she loves the people of the church, the relationships that have been built over the decades and the belief in the mission and ministry of Bedford Presbyterian Church.
Beth Evarts, Director of Communications
Beth Evarts lives in Bedford, NH, with her daughter and their two dogs. She has over 25 years of career experience in creating and implementing brand strategies, digital and traditional marketing programs, website strategies, creating content, and establishing growth opportunities through communications and outreach programs. As an outdoor enthusiast, you can find Beth walking the many recreational trails around town. Beth looks forward to supporting opportunities for membership growth, engagement, and community involvement.
Ken Gardner, Sexton
Originally from Phoenix, Arizona, Ken Gardner has lived in Michigan, New York, and South Carolina due to his military family upbringing. He now calls Manchester, NH, home with his family. Ken and his companion Tiffany have a thriving local residential/commercial cleaning business. As the oldest of four siblings and a father of five, Ken values his family time and enjoys music and sports. We welcome Ken in his new role as BPC Sexton. He will help our church prepare for worship services, parish life, meetings, and community activities through general maintenance, cleaning, and upkeep of the buildings and grounds. We are confident that, in time, we’ll turn him into a Red Sox or Patriots fan!
The Rev. Karen J. Hagy, Pastor Emeritus
The Reverend Karen Hagy, who served Bedford Presbyterian Church as pastor for nearly 22 years, retired on December 29, 2019. Reverend Hagy’s connection with BPC began more than 30 years ago when she joined the church as member with young children. Rev. Hagy has been actively engaged in mission work during retirement.
The Rev. Harold G. Williams, Pastor Emeritus
The Session: Church Leadership
Our church is guided by the session, a ruling body composed of elders and the pastor(s). We elect members as elders for a term of two years with a maximum of three consecutive two-year terms (6 consecutive years), ordained into service of this congregation of The Presbyterian Church, U.S.A. (PCUSA). The congregation votes democratically on all matters of consequence to the church. We also have a board of deacons elected and ordained by the congregation who serve in a ministry of compassion and service under the direction of session.
