This week, we mark the beginning of the Season of Lent – forty days that lead up to the celebration of the Resurrection on Easter. For some, Lent is a time for letting something go or “giving something up.” For others, Lent is a time for taking on a new spiritual practice or way of life. All of this is done with the hope that believers can draw closer to God through worship, repentance, study, service, and trust in God’s mercy.

Over the next six Sundays, the theme for our worship at BPC is “Seeking: Honest Questions for Deeper Faith.” Each Sunday at 10 AM, we will be asking a question that is linked to our scripture readings.

  • 1st Sunday in Lent – February 26 – “Who will you listen to?” – Genesis 2:15-17 and 3:1-7, Matthew 4:1-11 – exploring the theme of temptation and hearing what we want vs. what we need to hear.
  • 2nd Sunday in Lent – March 5 – “How do we begin again?” – Genesis 12:1-4 and John 3:1-17 – exploring new beginnings (both physical and spiritual)
  • 3rd Sunday in Lent – March 12 – “Will you give me a drink?” – Exodus 17:1-7 and John 4:5-42 – exploring our reliance on God to give us what we need
  • 4th Sunday in Lent – March 19 – “Who sinned?” – 1 Samuel 16:1-13 and John 9:1-41 – exploring the human need to know “why” and God’s way of answering (or not answering, exactly) our questions
  • 5th Sunday in Lent – March 26 – “Can these bones live?” – Ezekiel 37:1-14 and John 11:1-45 – exploring life and death and the ways God is at work in the midst of both
  • 6th Sunday in Lent / Palm Sunday – April 2 – “Where are you headed?” – Matthew 21:1-11 – exploring where Jesus is going and whether or not we are going with him
  • Maundy Thursday – April 6 – Join us for our Maundy Thursday Service at 7 PM
  • Easter Sunday – April 9 – 7 and 10 AM – “Who are you looking for?” – Matthew 28:1-10 – exploring the joy of the resurrection and its promise in our lives

Over the course of Lent, we will also be journeying together through a special Lenten Devotional book, which will be available at the church this Sunday, 2/26, or can be mailed to you.

There is much to explore, and I am excited we will be exploring these big questions together.

Grace and Peace,

John
