In the Bible, there are some people who live for a very long time.  Methuselah is not a major character in the Book of Genesis, but we are told in Genesis 5:21-27 that Methuselah lived 969 years.  That’s quite a life!  Of course, back in those days, I’m not sure how they were able to keep track of all that time.  Maybe Methuselah lived a few years shy of 969.

In Psalm 90:10, we read “The days of our life are seventy years, or perhaps eighty, if we are strong. . .”  The King James version of the Bible puts this in a more poetic way:  “the days of our years are threescore years and ten; and. . . by reason of strength they be fourscore years. . .”

In my life, I have only known a handful of people who have lived 100 years.  Come to think of it, I’ve only known two: a woman named Lu Daumer in the first church I served after seminary and BPC’s own John Robinson.  John has lived — and continues to live — a remarkable life and I will be present to celebrate him this coming Sunday at a birthday party in Durham, NH.  According to the invitation, we will be celebrating John’s “first centennial.”  I love this!

How long do you think you will live?  None of us knows how long we have.  I can guarantee that we probably won’t be racking up Methuselah-esque numbers.  What matters, though, is what we do with the time that we do have.  Every moment is precious.  Every moment is a gift.  This is something that John Robinson believes.

May we also believe this – trusting it to be true.

See you in church!

Grace and Peace,

John
