Dear Bedford Presbyterian Church,

Just how long is 275 years?  In the scope of recorded history or in the way that God experiences time, 275 years is a short blip.  Still, if we were to start writing down the things that have occurred in the life of the world since our spiritual ancestors founded Bedford Presbyterian Church in 1749, it would take us a long, long time.

In 1749, those hearty people who carved a town out of the wilderness, planted farms, and founded a church knew that the warmth of the sunlight helped to give life to the earth.  They had no idea that the sun’s rays could be harnessed to power electric lights, heat and cool buildings, save money, enhance the ministry of a church, and care for God’s wondrous creation.

All these years later, with our “Bright Hope for Tomorrow” Campaign, we are marking our 275th anniversary as a congregation by giving thanks to those who came before us and giving a gift to those who will come after us.  Throughout the generations, God has blessed us in so many wonderful ways and has given us the opportunity – through the innovation of technology and the forward-thinking of our leaders – to be a blessing to future Bedford Presbyterians.

The famous hymn, “Great Is Thy Faithfulness,” points toward these innumerable blessings that are all ours, by the gracious gift of God:

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth,
Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide,
Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow:
Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!

Friends, it has only been 275 years. . . just a blip in the big scheme of things. . . but even after all these years, God is not through with us.  There is more that God will give and more that we can offer in response to God’s goodness.

This week, many of you will be receiving an envelope at home. In this envelope, you will find a colorful and informative brochure, describing our “Bright Hope for Tomorrow” Campaign as well as a Commitment Card.  We are hoping to receive your card and/or your gift by Sunday, May 12, so that we can announce the results of our campaign during our 275th Anniversary Celebration the following week.

Thank you for your generosity and thanks be to God for 275 years of blessings with ten thousand more (and even more) to come.

Grace and Peace,

John Sawyer
