Fall is, no matter our ages, the time when our minds turn to new beginnings. Here in New England, we get the best show naturally of the change of the seasons, and as someone who is from here, I happen to think it’s unbeatable! But for many families, fall also signals our children starting a new school year. New options abound. Might it also be a swell time to start a fresh habit at church? Think of it as “habit-stacking” new experiences while the opportunity for change is already abundant.

Best selling author James Clear explains it this way:

“One of the best ways to build a new habit is to identify a current habit you already do each day and then stack your new behavior on top. This is called habit stacking.”

In other words, it can be helpful to bundle up new experiences with one another, while the brain’s magnificent pathways are already doing the work of forging new school rhythms. As Presbyterians, we believe that the Holy Spirit gives us what we need to begin again in new and deeper ways.
